South Bend, Indiana – Lake effect snow is coating highways across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, creating slick travel conditions that could slow drivers through mid-afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. EST / 3 p.m. CST Monday for Starke, Marshall, La Porte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, along with Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan. Additional snowfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected, with isolated totals near 3 inches in heavier bands. Winds will gust up to 25 mph, leading to patchy blowing and drifting snow.
Snow showers are impacting stretches of Interstate 94, U.S. 31 and U.S. 20, especially near La Porte, South Bend and into Benton Harbor and Niles. In Cass County, Michigan, lighter accumulations under an inch are expected, mainly across western sections of the county, but gusty winds could still reduce visibility at times.
Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. Even minor accumulations can quickly freeze on bridges and overpasses.
Snow showers will taper later this afternoon, but slick spots may linger into the evening commute before conditions gradually improve.
