Rochester, Indiana – Snow-covered roads and reduced traction are causing travel headaches across north-central Indiana as steady snowfall continues into Thursday afternoon, impacting both the morning and midday commute.
According to the National Weather Service serving northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. for Fulton and Pulaski counties. Additional snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected, with locally higher totals possible under heavier snow bands. Even brief periods of moderate snow could quickly coat roads and reduce visibility.
Communities including Rochester, Winamac, Akron, Leiters Ford, and surrounding rural areas are seeing slick conditions develop on untreated roads. Travel along U.S. 31, State Road 25, State Road 14, and county routes may become increasingly hazardous as snow continues to accumulate. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads are especially prone to icing.
The snow is expected to remain somewhat banded, meaning conditions can change rapidly over short distances. Drivers may encounter dry pavement one moment and snow-covered roads just a few miles later, increasing the risk of spinouts and slide-offs.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for changing conditions. Checking 511 road updates before traveling is strongly recommended. Snow should taper later this afternoon, but lingering slick spots could persist into the evening hours on less-traveled roads.
