Indianapolis, Ind. – Roads across south central and southwest Indiana could turn slick within hours as snow, sleet and freezing rain move in by 2 a.m. Monday, creating hazardous conditions just ahead of the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. EST Monday for Sullivan, Greene, Knox, Daviess, Martin and Lawrence counties. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of combined snow and sleet, along with a light glaze of ice that can quickly freeze on untreated pavement.
The highest travel risk will develop before sunrise on elevated surfaces, including bridges along U.S. 41 near Vincennes, State Road 37 near Bedford and Mitchell, and rural routes around Linton, Bloomfield and Shoals. Even a thin ice coating can trigger spinouts, especially on secondary roads that may not see immediate treatment.
INDOT urges drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for live road updates. School delays are possible if icing lingers past 7 a.m.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing late Monday morning, gradually improving conditions, but slick spots could persist until mid-morning. Additional statements may be issued if ice accumulates faster than expected.
