Rochester, Indiana – Drivers across Northern Indiana should prepare for hazardous travel conditions tonight as lake effect snow intensifies, bringing accumulating snowfall and periods of sharply reduced visibility through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through Thursday afternoon for Fulton, Pulaski, Elkhart, and Kosciusko counties. Snow totals are expected to range from 1 to 4 inches in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties, while portions of Fulton and Pulaski counties could see between 2 and 6 inches, with the highest amounts likely in northern sections closer to Lake Michigan’s influence.
The most intense lake effect snow showers are expected overnight, when winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph may cause blowing and drifting snow. These conditions can quickly reduce visibility and make roads slick, especially on bridges, overpasses, and open stretches of roadway. Travel impacts are likely during the Wednesday evening commute and again Thursday morning as snow-covered roads linger.
Rural roads and north–south routes may become particularly treacherous as drifting snow develops. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for sudden changes in visibility as snow bands shift.
Snow showers are expected to gradually taper Thursday, though slippery conditions may persist into the afternoon before crews can fully clear roads. Additional travel advisories remain possible if lake effect snow bands become more persistent than expected.
