Indianapolis, IN – Indiana drivers are being urged to move over and slow down this weekend as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Indiana State Police (ISP) highlight National Move Over Day on Saturday, October 18. The reminder underscores the dangers faced by emergency responders and stranded motorists stopped along highways and interstates.

According to state officials, Indiana’s Move Over Law—originally enacted in 1999 and expanded in 2023—requires drivers to change lanes or slow down by at least 10 mph below the speed limit when approaching any stationary vehicle with flashing lights, including police, fire, tow, utility, or disabled vehicles. Violators risk a Class B infraction.

“Many of these roadside crashes are preventable,” said ISP Superintendent Anthony Scott. “We continue to see troopers and first responders struck by inattentive or impaired drivers, often with tragic results.”

INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist added that slowing down or changing lanes “saves lives — not only for emergency crews but for all motorists.”

AAA reports that 14 Hoosiers were killed outside of stopped or disabled vehicles in 2023, with more than 400 fatalities nationwide. Officials say increased awareness and compliance could prevent many of these deaths.
