Morocco, IN – Drivers in Newton County should prepare for significant traffic changes as lane closures are scheduled to begin this week along U.S. 41 near State Road 14.
U.S. 41 will have alternating lane closures starting on or after Monday, May 5, for a Median U-turn (MUT) construction project expected to continue through mid-November. Initially, the right lanes in each direction will close for pre-construction work, with the inside left lanes set to close starting Monday, May 12.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation: Northwest, this construction aims to improve traffic flow and safety with a new intersection design. Phase one will focus on work requiring left lane closures in both directions. Motorists are advised to be alert for changing traffic patterns throughout the project.
The MUT design was previously presented at a public hearing in fall 2024 and is intended to enhance traffic efficiency at this critical intersection. INDOT has provided additional information about the project and the benefits of MUT intersections at this link.
The affected area runs just north of Morocco, Indiana, near the Illinois state line, a key corridor for regional transportation. Officials urge drivers to plan extra travel time and exercise caution through the work zone.
