Lake County, IN – Drivers on Interstate 65 should plan for overnight lane closures and major traffic shifts starting Wednesday, October 1, as pavement patching work continues through the fall.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), I-65 southbound will close overnight from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for one night to allow crews to reconfigure lanes. The work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Once complete, southbound I-65 will have three lanes shifted to the left with the work zone on the right shoulder. The farthest left lane will continue as a counterflow lane on the northbound side. INDOT notes that motorists using this counterflow lane will not be able to access the U.S. 30, 61st Avenue, or Ridge Road interchanges.

Northbound I-65 traffic will remain in its current three-lane configuration, shifted to the right. However, several key ramps will be impacted by the pavement patching work. The ramp from both eastbound and westbound 61st Avenue to southbound I-65 will close beginning Wednesday night and remain shut down through early November. The ramp from Ridge Road to southbound I-65 also remains closed and is expected to reopen in late November.

The changes mark the next phase of INDOT’s ongoing I-65 pavement patching project, which is scheduled to continue into late fall. Drivers in Lake County, including those traveling near Merrillville, Hobart, and Gary, should expect delays and allow extra time for overnight travel.

Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes if accessing I-65 southbound from Ridge Road or 61st Avenue during the closure period.
