Lake County, IN – Drivers in northwest Indiana should prepare for overnight lane closures on I-65 starting Thursday night as construction moves into phase two of a bridge deck overlay project.
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that Superior Construction Co Inc. will begin transitioning northbound I-65 traffic to a new configuration near Ridge Road and 61st Avenue. Work will begin after 8 p.m. Thursday and continue until 4 a.m. Friday to shift traffic northbound over the Norfolk Southern Railroad bridge using newly constructed crossovers.
According to the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, starting Friday morning, northbound I-65 will feature three lanes split around a work zone on the right. The far-left lane will become a counterflow lane using the southbound side of the interstate. Southbound traffic will not be affected by this new configuration.
Additionally, the ramp from Ridge Road to southbound I-65 will remain closed through mid-August to ensure worker and driver safety. INDOT expects construction in the area to last through mid-October.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, obey all posted signage, and drive distraction-free through the work zone. INDOT also encourages drivers to slow down and exercise caution while navigating the updated traffic pattern.
This major infrastructure update is part of an ongoing effort to improve bridge safety and longevity in the region.
