Vermillion County, IN – A crash has shut down westbound traffic on Interstate 74 near the 4-mile marker in Vermillion County, prompting emergency diversions and significant backups Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the collision occurred near State Road 63, with traffic now being rerouted onto S.R. 63. INDOT shared a traffic camera image from County Road 200 E., showing vehicles at a standstill as responders work the scene. Multiple semis are visible in the backup, and electronic signage on the shoulder confirms lane closures and diversion instructions.

The crash, reported around 2:20 p.m. local time, led to an immediate closure of the westbound lanes as crews arrived to address the situation. There has been no official report on the cause of the crash or if any injuries were involved.

As of this writing, traffic remains heavily congested, and drivers are strongly urged to avoid the area. Alternate routes should be used until the scene is cleared and normal traffic flow resumes.

State and local authorities are managing the response. INDOT has not provided an estimated time for reopening the highway but stated that updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

Motorists traveling through western Indiana today should monitor local traffic advisories and exercise caution in the area.
