Indianapolis, IN – A tornado watch remains in effect for much of Indiana this evening, with 28 counties under heightened alert as storms continue to move across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, Tornado Watch 99 remains active until 11 p.m. EDT Wednesday, affecting counties across central, north central, south central, southwest, and west central Indiana. Areas under the watch include Marion County, home to Indianapolis, along with Tippecanoe, Monroe, Vigo, and Johnson counties.
The watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, monitor local alerts, and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued.
Cities included in the alert span major population centers and rural communities alike, including Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Kokomo, and Vincennes. Other communities under watch include Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, and Zionsville.
Emergency management agencies urge residents to have multiple ways of receiving warnings, such as weather radios, mobile alerts, or local news broadcasts, and to avoid unnecessary travel until the threat passes.
Severe storms associated with this system may bring damaging winds, large hail, and the potential for isolated tornadoes. Officials stress that the situation may change rapidly as the storm line advances.
