Lake County, IN – A public health alert from the Lake County Health Department highlights the life-saving impact of Narcan after three overdoses were successfully reversed in the county last week.
According to a post by the Lake County Indiana Health Department, Narcan distributed by the department was used in three separate incidents, effectively saving the lives of individuals experiencing opioid overdoses. The department emphasized that these events underscore the importance of carrying and knowing how to use Narcan (naloxone), a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Health officials outlined key steps for responding to an overdose: call 911, administer Narcan if available, and remain with the person until emergency responders arrive. Signs of an overdose include slowed or absent breathing, blue or gray lips and fingertips, unresponsiveness, choking or gurgling sounds, and a limp body.
Narcan is available to the public at the Lake County Health Department, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“Opioid overdoses are preventable,” the department noted in its public service announcement. “Recognizing the signs and acting fast can save lives.”
The health department is urging community members to carry Narcan and familiarize themselves with the signs of an overdose. With opioid-related deaths continuing to affect communities across Indiana, local health officials are stressing the importance of harm reduction tools and public education.
For more information or to pick up Narcan, residents are encouraged to visit the Lake County Health Department during business hours.
