Floyd County, IN – Local deputies are stepping up patrols beginning Tuesday, November 26, as part of a statewide holiday traffic safety campaign aimed at curbing impaired and unsafe driving.
According to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, the department is partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to launch the annual Safe Family Travel campaign, which runs through the end of December.
During the effort, officers will work overtime to conduct sobriety checkpoints, seat belt enforcement, and saturation patrols targeting aggressive or impaired drivers. Officials say the goal is to reduce traffic fatalities during one of the busiest—and most dangerous—travel seasons of the year.
“By buckling up, slowing down, and never driving impaired, we can all help make Indiana’s roads safer this season,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of ICJI.
NHTSA data shows alcohol-impaired driving remains one of the top causes of fatal crashes, particularly during holidays. Sheriff Steve Bush urged drivers to plan ahead: “If you plan to drink, make a plan for a safe ride home.”
Motorists are encouraged to call 911 to report unsafe or impaired drivers. Safety resources are available at www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving.
