New Albany, IN – A man allegedly wielding a sword was shot and killed outside a New Albany residence on Saturday evening, according to Indiana State Police.

Reports say it began around 5 p.m., Kevin Campbell, 68, was inside his home on Slate Run Road when he reportedly heard a noise outside his bedroom window. Campbell allegedly armed himself with a small-caliber rifle and went to his front door, where he encountered 41-year-old Christopher Proctor standing outside with a sword in hand.

Authorities say Proctor moved toward Campbell’s doorway, prompting Campbell to fire a single shot, striking Proctor in the chest. Proctor was pronounced dead at the scene by the Floyd County Coroner’s Office.

Nearly two hours after the incident, Campbell called the New Albany Police Department to report a deceased man in his yard. When officers arrived, Campbell admitted to firing the fatal shot. He was detained and transported to the Sellersburg Post for questioning.

Campbell now faces an obstruction of justice charge, a Level 6 felony. He remains in custody at the Floyd County Jail as investigators continue to review the case.
