Indianapolis, IN – Although West Nile virus is not new to Indiana, the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) continues to stress the importance of mosquito prevention. With ongoing concerns about mosquito-borne diseases, residents are urged to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families.
According to the IDOH, mosquitoes that transmit diseases like West Nile virus are most active at dawn and dusk. To reduce the risk of infection, residents should use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, lemon eucalyptus oil, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. Treating outdoor clothes and gear with permethrin, which should never be applied directly to the skin, can provide an additional layer of defense.
Wearing long sleeves, long pants, hats, socks, and shoes that cover the entire foot is also recommended to minimize exposed skin, making it harder for mosquitoes to bite. The IDOH’s ongoing campaign to #FightTheBite and promote #MosquitoPrevention aims to educate the public about the health risks posed by mosquito-borne diseases and the steps that can be taken to reduce exposure.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about mosquito activity in their area and consistently apply these preventive measures. For more information on mosquito prevention and West Nile virus, visit the Indiana Department of Health website.
