Indianapolis, Ind. – Tornadoes, destructive winds, and flooding could hit southern Indiana Friday evening as the region faces its highest severe weather threat of the season. Areas including Bloomington, Seymour, and Jasper are under a Level 4 (Moderate Risk) alert, with conditions ripe for 80 mph winds, 2-inch hail, and isolated tornadoes between 5 and 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, storms are expected to begin forming by late afternoon and intensify quickly. The greatest risk covers south-central counties, stretching north toward Indianapolis and east into Richmond. All severe weather hazards—including flooding—are possible.

Drivers on I-65, I-69, and US-50 should expect sudden low visibility, debris, or ponding. Local emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid unnecessary travel this evening. Schools and evening events may be delayed or canceled in high-risk zones.

This outbreak mirrors similar spring systems seen in May 2022 and could produce fast-moving cells difficult to track in real-time.

Additional warnings may be issued later today. Residents should monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
