Indianapolis, IN – With the holiday season in full swing, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is urging residents to prioritize Christmas tree safety. A dry tree can quickly become a fire hazard, putting homes and families at risk.

The agency recommends watering trees daily to keep them hydrated and away from heat sources like fireplaces or radiators. Lights should be checked for damage, and turned off when the house is empty or occupants are asleep. Brittle needles signal a tree drying out, which may warrant early removal.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heat sources too close to trees cause 25% of Christmas tree fires annually. Inspecting cords and trimming the tree base for proper water absorption are additional tips highlighted by officials.
