Indianapolis, IN – Hoosiers may have a unique opportunity to witness the Northern Lights as a geomagnetic storm is set to enhance aurora visibility Monday night into Tuesday. The aurora borealis could extend as far south as Indiana due to heightened solar activity.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the geomagnetic activity is forecasted to reach a Kp index of 6-7, which is sufficient for auroras to be visible in Indiana. The best viewing times are expected between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Central Time, provided skies remain clear.

The aurora borealis, characterized by its shimmering green and red lights, occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s magnetic field. For the best experience, residents should seek out dark, open areas away from city lights. Checking weather forecasts for potential cloud cover and monitoring aurora activity online can increase chances of catching this spectacular natural display.
