Rensselaer, IN – Residents in Rensselaer are being urged to exercise caution after local authorities reported an alleged scam involving fake home rental listings circulating on social media.

According to a post Wednesday morning from the Rensselaer Police Department, scammers are currently advertising fraudulent rental properties online, encouraging potential renters to send money through social media apps. Police warned that these listings often appear legitimate, using photos of real homes and detailed descriptions, but are in fact schemes designed to collect deposits or rent payments from unsuspecting individuals.

The police department emphasized the importance of verifying rental listings and urged residents not to send money or share personal information unless they have thoroughly confirmed the legitimacy of the rental and the identity of the landlord or property manager. In one example cited by authorities, a house allegedly listed for rent was not actually available, and the supposed rental company had no association with the property.

Authorities also advised the public to be wary of requests for payments via peer-to-peer money transfer apps or cryptocurrency, both of which are difficult to recover if a transaction turns out to be fraudulent. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious rental listings to local law enforcement immediately.

The ongoing scam highlights a growing trend in online rental fraud across Indiana and other states. Law enforcement officials are reminding the public that legitimate property management companies will typically arrange in-person viewings and use formal contracts before requesting any payments.

For more information or to report a scam, residents can contact the Rensselaer Police Department directly.
