Indianapolis, IN – Hazmat professionals across Indiana are being encouraged to sign up for a no-cost, immersive training opportunity taking place later this year in Pueblo, Colorado.

According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, free Hazmat training will be offered during Indiana Week at the Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3, 2025. The program is designed to prepare participants for real-world surface transportation emergencies through full-scale, hands-on simulations.

Participants can choose between two course tracks: the Tank Car Specialist (TCS) program or the Highway Emergency Response Specialist (HERS) course. Each option is open to 40 attendees, with travel and training costs reimbursed by FEMA.

To apply, interested professionals must first complete an application for the specific course and send it to Rusty Goodpaster at rgoodpaster@dhs.in.gov. The application must also be approved by a department supervisor before being submitted. After receiving confirmation, applicants must register for the course in the Acadis Portal to finalize enrollment.

Eligibility requirements include hazmat certification and completion of NIMS 100, 200, and 700. Applicants who have previously attended a SERTC course in the last three years will not be eligible.

More information, including course prerequisites and details, can be found on the Indiana HAZMAT website at on.in.gov/iahmr or by visiting SERTC.org.
