Lafayette, IN – Indiana State Police are alerting residents about a phone scam in which callers allegedly impersonate law enforcement officers and demand money from victims.

According to Indiana State Police, scammers are calling Hoosiers and falsely claiming that their bank accounts have been compromised. The callers allegedly pressure victims into withdrawing funds and transferring money through QR codes, gas station kiosks, gift cards, or other unusual payment methods.

Authorities emphasized that legitimate law enforcement officers will never call and demand payment. Residents are being urged not to share personal or financial information with unknown callers. Police advise hanging up immediately if someone receives a suspicious call.

Victims who believe they have been targeted or scammed can file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. Officials said raising awareness is the best defense against fraud, particularly for elderly residents, who are often the primary targets of such schemes.

Police encourage Hoosiers to share this warning with family, friends, and neighbors to prevent further cases.
