Orange County, IN – A small plane crash late Saturday night in southern Indiana led to an hours-long search before first responders located the pilot alive early Sunday morning, according to the Indiana State Police Jasper Post.

Authorities say the Louisville Airport and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a possible downed aircraft around 10:00 p.m. Saturday, October 4, near the Orange County and Lawrence County line. The single-engine Lancair fixed-wing plane was discovered around 4:00 a.m. Sunday in a heavily wooded area near Old Vincennes Road.

According to police, the pilot was found inside the wreckage with non-life-threatening injuries and had to be carried out by stretcher due to the dense terrain. Troopers from the Jasper and Bloomington districts assisted, along with local law enforcement and multiple EMS and fire departments from Martin and Orange counties.

The FAA has been notified and will handle the ongoing investigation.
