Indiana – Cold air bites hard across northern Indiana this morning, rattling bare trees and pushing flags straight out. Side streets look calm, but the cold tightens quickly, setting the stage for a rough stretch of winter weather.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect Friday morning through early afternoon. Wind chills between 15 and 20 below zero are expected, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes. A prolonged period of sub-zero wind chills continues into the weekend.
Light snow may develop at times tonight, especially north of US-30. Gusty west winds, reaching 30 to 40 mph, could briefly reduce visibility where snow is falling. Drivers in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas should be alert for slick spots, particularly on bridges and untreated roads.
The cold deepens Friday and Saturday. Daytime highs struggle to reach the single digits, while nights dip below zero. Even with limited snowfall, travel risks remain elevated as flash freezing turns damp pavement icy after sunset. I-69, US-30, and local roads may become hazardous quickly.
Snow chances increase late Saturday into Sunday. Accumulating snow is possible, with the best window Saturday night into early Sunday. Blowing snow may add to travel concerns, especially in open rural areas of Allen County and nearby northwest Ohio communities.
Sunday stays cold and mostly cloudy, with lingering snow chances before quieter conditions return. Early next week brings slow moderation, though temperatures remain below normal and winter impacts persist.
Residents should dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and keep pets inside. Travel plans may need flexibility as conditions change.
