A bitter December chill grips northern Indiana this morning, the kind that makes even short walks feel like mid-January. Skies stay mostly clear early, but frigid air and light snow chances by the weekend mark a sharp turn toward true winter conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, temperatures will hover near freezing today, with winds from the northwest making it feel closer to the teens. By Friday, the region turns mostly sunny but remains cold, as wind chills fall below zero overnight.

The next change comes late Saturday when clouds thicken and a 20–40% chance of snow showers develops, potentially leaving a dusting to an inch of accumulation across Allen County and I-69 corridors. Slick spots may form on bridges and rural roadways, especially during evening travel.

Sunday stays cloudy and frigid, with highs around 26°F and lows near 4°F. By Monday morning, temperatures could dip below zero in outlying areas — dangerous cold for anyone outdoors too long. Meteorologists urge residents to check vehicles, dress in layers, and protect pets and pipes.

Long-range models now hint that the Great Lakes and Midwest could see a more active winter pattern between December 11–17, with renewed lake-effect snow potential spreading from Wisconsin through northern Indiana and Michigan.

Plan ahead for the chill. Limit outdoor time and prepare for icy conditions late this weekend — winter has officially settled in across the Hoosier State.
