Chesterton, IN – A police officer was injured and a suspect was fatally shot during an early morning confrontation at a hotel in Chesterton.
According to the Indiana State Police, the incident occurred around 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Hilton Garden Inn on Gateway Boulevard. Chesterton officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in the hotel who was not a registered guest. Upon arrival, officers located the individual, and a confrontation ensued.
Police say gunfire was exchanged during the altercation, leaving one officer with a gunshot wound. The injured officer was taken to a trauma hospital in Illinois and has since been released. Officials said the officer is expected to fully recover.
The suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Porter County Coroner. No other injuries were reported.
Indiana State Police detectives and crime scene investigators have taken over the investigation at the request of Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson. The findings will be submitted to the Porter County Prosecutor for official review once the investigation is complete.
Next of kin for the deceased has been notified, and an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the exact cause of death. The coroner’s office will release the individual’s identity according to standard procedure.
The Indiana State Police noted that no additional details will be released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
