Marion, IN — An officer with the Marion Police Department exchanged gunfire with a suspect Sunday morning after witnessing an individual firing from a moving SUV near a residential intersection.
According to the Indiana State Police Peru Post, the incident began around 10:17 a.m. when Marion officers responded to a shots-fired call near 4th and Western Streets. The initial report stated that a white SUV’s passenger had allegedly fired at a pedestrian.
While en route, an officer encountered a vehicle matching the description near 1st and D Streets. Authorities say the officer observed a passenger in the SUV continuing to fire toward a pedestrian, believed to be the same individual targeted earlier. The officer reportedly returned fire, prompting the suspect to flee the scene on foot. The individual has not been located as of Sunday afternoon.
State Police confirmed that no one is believed to have been struck by bullets from either the officer or the suspect. However, multiple homes in the area sustained gunfire damage. No injuries have been reported at this time.
Authorities have not released the name or duty status of the officer involved. Inquiries regarding the officer’s identity are being directed to the Marion Police Department.
The investigation remains ongoing, and findings will be submitted to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office upon completion, officials said. No additional details were made available Sunday.
