Indianapolis, Indiana — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect Thursday morning across northern Indiana and parts of southwest Michigan as lake-effect snow continues to create dangerous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, Starke County is under a Winter Storm Warning until noon CST, with additional snowfall of 3 to 8 inches expected. The heaviest accumulations are forecast in the northeast and eastern portions of the county. Wind gusts between 25 and 35 miles per hour are producing blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility at times.
A separate Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST (noon CST) for Marshall County, northern and southern La Porte County, eastern and western St. Joseph County in Indiana, and southern Berrien County in Michigan. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected in these areas.
Forecasters warned that visibilities may drop below one-quarter mile, with whiteout conditions possible, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to be slick and snow-covered, with the greatest impacts occurring during the Thursday morning commute.
The National Weather Service emphasized that lake-effect snow bands can cause conditions to change rapidly over short distances, with heavy snow and near-zero visibility occurring just miles from dry pavement.
Officials strongly advise delaying travel if possible. Drivers who must be on the roads are urged to use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies. Current road conditions can be checked by calling 511.
