Fort Wayne, IN – The air feels heavier this morning across northern Indiana as a wave of December cold and lake-effect snow settles in. The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana says snow showers will redevelop Friday night through Saturday, bringing 1 to 2 inches for many areas north of Highway 30 — with locally higher amounts possible closer to the Michigan border.
Forecasters caution that roads may turn slick quickly, especially on bridges and rural routes. Friday night’s low near 15°F will set the stage for icy conditions early Saturday, followed by highs struggling to reach 20°F under mostly cloudy skies. Light snow will continue through Saturday afternoon before tapering off.
Travelers along I-69, I-80/90, and U.S. 24 should plan for patchy visibility and blowing snow, particularly during bursts of heavier flurries. “Even a quick inch can make untreated roads slick,” meteorologists warned.
The bigger story, however, arrives with the coldest air of the season. By early Sunday, temperatures are expected to drop below zero across rural counties, with wind chills dipping to -10°F. Experts recommend checking on elderly neighbors and keeping pets indoors through the weekend’s freeze.
Five-Day Outlook:
- Friday: Cloudy, high 29°F, chance of snow late.
- Saturday: Snow likely early, high 19°F, low 4°F.
- Sunday: Bitter cold, high 17°F, low 2°F.
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 28°F, low 12°F.
