Berrien County, MI – Beachgoers along Southeast Lake Michigan are being urged to stay out of the water today as dangerous swimming conditions develop across Berrien County and nearby La Porte County, Indiana. Waves reaching up to 6 feet and life-threatening rip currents are expected to last through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, a High Swim Risk has been issued for Thursday, July 31, due to winds from the north at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. These conditions are fueling structural and rip currents that pose serious hazards for swimmers.
Those planning to visit area beaches—especially near piers and breakwalls—should avoid entering the water and heed all posted warnings and lifeguard instructions. The advisory specifically affects shoreline areas in La Porte County, IN and Berrien County, MI.
Officials stress that even strong swimmers are at risk under these conditions. Families are encouraged to keep children away from the water’s edge and avoid walking on piers, where waves may crash over unexpectedly.
This marks one of the more severe swim risk days of the summer. The warning remains in effect until at least Friday morning, with updates possible based on wind and wave activity.
