South Bend, IN – A Gale Warning remains in effect for the southern Lake Michigan shoreline from Michigan City, Indiana, to St. Joseph, Michigan, as strong west winds continue to create dangerous marine conditions through 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday, October 22.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, west winds between 20 and 30 knots with gusts up to 40 knots are expected, producing waves of 6 to 12 feet. These hazardous conditions pose serious risks for small craft, with potential for capsizing, vessel damage, and reduced visibility.
Forecasters urge all mariners to remain in port or seek safe harbor until conditions improve late Wednesday. The warning covers a key stretch of the southern Great Lakes, where gusty winds and rough waves have persisted through the early part of the week.
The NWS cautions that lake conditions may remain choppy even after winds begin to ease Wednesday night, and advises extra caution for those along beaches and piers.
