South Bend, IN – A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and northwest Ohio from late Friday night through Sunday afternoon, with heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions expected, according to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana.
Forecasters say the system could bring 7 to 11 inches of snow northwest of a line from Logansport to Warsaw, IN, to Hillsdale, MI, with lighter totals of 2 to 6 inches south of U.S. Route 24. In Cass, Berrien, and St. Joseph Counties in Michigan, totals could reach 6 to 12 inches once lake effect enhancement begins.
The heaviest snowfall rates—up to 1 to 2 inches per hour—are expected Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening, likely making travel very difficult or dangerous across key corridors including I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road), I-69, and U.S. 30.
An earlier Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Friday morning for brief bursts of lake effect snow in southern Michigan, where 1 to 2 additional inches are expected.
Drivers are urged to monitor updated forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for rapidly changing road and visibility conditions. Officials recommend carrying emergency supplies and checking 511in.org and MDOT’s MiDrive for live travel updates.
