Michigan City, Indiana – Swimmers along the Southeast Lake Michigan coastline, particularly in La Porte County, Indiana, and Berrien County, Michigan, face a moderate swim risk this morning. Breaking waves and strong currents are expected to create hazardous conditions for beachgoers.

According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, these dangerous swimming conditions are in effect through the morning hours of Thursday, July 10. While wave heights are expected to subside, the moderate swim risk will persist, urging caution for anyone entering the water.

Winds from the north at 5 to 10 MPH are contributing to 2-3 foot waves this morning. These wave heights are anticipated to drop to around 1 foot by the afternoon, which should reduce the swim risk to low. Beach visitors should heed all warnings from lifeguards and consider using flotation devices if entering the water.

This warning is particularly relevant for popular spots along the Indiana Dunes National Park and other beaches stretching into southwest Michigan. Officials advise avoiding non-essential swimming during the morning hours to ensure safety.

The moderate swim risk is expected to subside by this afternoon. However, residents and visitors should remain aware of changing lake conditions and any further advisories that may be issued.
