South Bend, IN – Residents along the Indiana–Michigan border could see four inches or more of snow this weekend as a developing system moves across northern Indiana and far southern Michigan from Saturday into early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana.

Forecasters say snow is expected to spread into northwest Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan early Saturday morning before expanding east across the region throughout the day. While the heaviest potential lies along the border counties—particularly from Michigan City to South Bend, Elkhart, and into St. Joseph and Branch Counties, MI—snow amounts may vary depending on how quickly warmer air arrives Saturday night.

Current projections show a 60–70% probability of at least 4 inches of snow near the state line, with localized higher totals possible if the system maintains colder temperatures longer than expected. Farther south into central Indiana, probabilities drop sharply as a potential rain/snow mix may limit accumulation.

Impacts could include slick roads, reduced visibility, and snow-covered untreated surfaces, especially late Saturday into Saturday night. Forecasters warn that periods of heavier snow may develop, creating quick travel slow-downs across interstates including I-94, the Indiana Toll Road, and US-31.

However, forecast uncertainty remains high. Models continue to struggle with the exact timing of warmer air Saturday night, which could briefly change snow to rain near the border and affect final totals.

Snow is expected to taper off early Sunday morning, though minor travel impacts could linger into the first half of the day.
