Michigan City, Indiana – Swimmers along Lake Michigan’s southern shores should exercise caution Friday morning as a moderate swim risk is in effect for beaches in Berrien County, Michigan, and La Porte County, Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, breaking waves between 2 and 3 feet and shifting currents are expected through early afternoon. Winds from the northeast at 5 mph, gradually turning east, are contributing to the choppy lake conditions. The advisory is expected to drop to low swim risk by later today as wave heights decrease to around 1 foot.
Visitors are urged to monitor beach warning flags, if available, and follow guidance from lifeguards and beach patrols. The NWS emphasizes that moderate swim risk conditions can still be dangerous, especially for inexperienced swimmers or children.
By midday, conditions are expected to improve, but beachgoers should continue checking local updates. The next official update from the NWS is expected between 10 and 11 a.m. EDT.
