Gary, IN – A Gary man has been sentenced to nearly nine years in federal prison after police found him asleep in a vehicle with a loaded rifle on his lap.
Cachun Combs Jr., 46, received a 105-month prison sentence Tuesday from U.S. District Court Judge Gretchen S. Lund. He also faces three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
On June 2, 2023, a Gary police officer discovered Combs sleeping in a running vehicle parked in an alley. Officers secured the weapon and determined that Combs, a convicted felon with a history of violent and drug-related offenses, was prohibited from owning firearms.
Combs’ criminal record includes felony convictions for aggravated discharge of a firearm, battery causing serious injury, and drug possession with intent to distribute.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Gary Police Department as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. This program seeks to reduce gun violence through federal, state, and local collaboration.
Law enforcement officials emphasized their dedication to removing illegal firearms and prosecuting repeat offenders to improve public safety.
