DeMotte, IN – A Winamac man is facing several felony charges after allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman and multiple deputies during a domestic disturbance last month south of DeMotte.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on July 23 to a report involving 28-year-old Rogelio M. Garcia. The victim told investigators Garcia grabbed her chest, damaged property, and tried to take her phone in front of children. Deputies said Garcia refused to identify himself, resisted arrest repeatedly, and at one point reached toward his waistband, prompting them to take him to the ground to be handcuffed.

While being transported, Garcia allegedly shattered a squad car window, injuring a deputy with broken glass. Authorities said he also bit and kicked deputies and spat on them multiple times during the encounter. EMS transported Garcia to a local hospital for treatment before he was medically cleared and taken to the Jasper County Detention Center.

Garcia was booked on multiple felony and misdemeanor counts, including domestic battery resulting in injury to a pregnant woman, battery to a public safety official, resisting law enforcement, intimidation, and battery by bodily waste. The Sheriff’s Office said additional charges relate to interference with reporting a crime, criminal mischief, and refusal to identify himself.

Officials stressed that arrests and criminal charges are accusations, and Garcia is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
