Northern Indiana – Life-threatening cold will grip northern Indiana on Friday as Arctic air drives wind chills to dangerously low levels, creating a serious frostbite risk for anyone exposed outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for northern Indiana from early Friday morning through early afternoon. Wind chills are expected to range between 15 and 25 degrees below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The highest risk includes South Bend, Elkhart, Goshen, Fort Wayne, Warsaw, Valparaiso, Plymouth, Angola, and surrounding communities. Morning commuters, school children, outdoor workers, and anyone without adequate winter protection face elevated danger during the coldest hours around sunrise through late morning.

Officials warn that prolonged exposure significantly increases the risk of hypothermia, even for those dressed in winter clothing. Vehicles may struggle to start, and emergency responders caution against becoming stranded outdoors for any length of time.

Residents are urged to limit time outside, wear multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, scarves, and face protection. Pets should be kept indoors, and neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly residents and those without reliable heating.

Cold conditions will remain hazardous through Friday afternoon, with wind chills staying well below zero before gradually improving later in the day.
