Indianapolis, Indiana – Life-threatening cold is settling across central Indiana, with wind chills dropping low enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of central Indiana from early Friday morning through early afternoon. Wind chills are expected to bottom out near 20 to 21 below zero during the coldest window, especially between 4 a.m. and late morning.

The highest risk stretches across the Indianapolis metro area and surrounding counties, including Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks, Boone, Madison, Tipton, Howard, Montgomery, and Vigo counties. Even brief outdoor exposure without proper winter gear could become dangerous, particularly for morning commuters, school drop-offs, and outdoor workers.

Officials warn that prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia in addition to frostbite. Vehicle batteries may struggle, and unprotected pipes could freeze as the cold persists through the day. Conditions will remain well below zero in terms of wind chill through Friday afternoon before slowly easing Friday night.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers including hats, gloves, and face coverings, and keep pets indoors. Neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly residents and anyone without reliable heat.

The Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Friday afternoon, with continued cold expected into Saturday morning. Additional advisories may be issued if the Arctic air lingers longer than anticipated.
