La Porte, IN – A string of thefts has struck local cemeteries, with several bronze markers honoring deceased veterans stolen. The incidents occurred at Union Mills and Rolling Prairie cemeteries over the past week. The stolen markers, affixed to the backs of headstones, are intended to honor veterans for their service.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) are leading the inquiry. They are reaching out to area scrapyards, alerting them to be on the lookout for the stolen markers. Authorities urge residents to check the gravesites of their loved ones to ensure the markers are still intact.
Residents are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity around gravesites. If you notice another marker has been taken, contact local law enforcement immediately.
