Porter County, IN – Residents in Porter County should prepare for lake effect snow tonight and dangerously low temperatures later this week. Forecasters expect temperatures to tumble as an arctic cold front moves in Wednesday night, bringing subzero wind chills by Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, lake effect snow could develop tonight, primarily affecting northeast Porter County. Snowfall is expected to remain light, with localized accumulation possible in areas near Lake Michigan. Gusty winds could lead to slick conditions on roadways, including Interstate 94 and U.S. Route 20.
By midweek, temperatures will climb briefly into the low 40s on Wednesday before a sharp drop occurs that night. Thursday morning wind chills may plunge to as low as -10°F to -5°F across the area, posing risks of frostbite for those exposed to the elements. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity during the coldest periods and dress in layers if venturing outside.
The five-day forecast calls for fluctuating conditions. Highs today and Tuesday will reach 30°F and 31°F, respectively, under mostly sunny skies. A slight chance of rain or snow arises Wednesday afternoon before the arctic front arrives. Thursday and Friday will remain frigid, with highs in the low 20s and nighttime lows dipping to single digits.
Drivers should exercise caution on potentially icy roads and monitor local weather updates for changing conditions.
