Columbus, Ohio – A dangerous stretch of heat is building across central Ohio, northern Kentucky, and east central Indiana, with heat index values climbing into the upper 90s and possibly topping 100 degrees from Sunday through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the heat wave begins this weekend, with highs in the low-to-mid 90s across cities such as Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati. While Saturday brings mostly sunny skies, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday afternoon, increasing the risk of downpours and lightning during peak heat hours.
Travelers on Interstates 70 and 71 could face reduced visibility and slick conditions during heavy rain bursts, especially late Sunday into Sunday night. Northern Kentucky, including Covington and Florence, will also face oppressive heat, with the added storm threat making outdoor activities hazardous.
Health officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors as heat index values reach dangerous levels. Power outages are possible if storms intensify, so residents are advised to charge devices and prepare for potential cooling center openings.
The excessive heat is expected to ease slightly by Wednesday, though scattered thunderstorms remain in the forecast.
