Louisville, Kentucky – Drivers across southern Indiana and north-central Kentucky could face sudden bursts of damaging wind and hail between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. today as strong thunderstorms rapidly develop during the afternoon commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville and Wilmington, a Level 2 severe weather risk is in place across the region, including Louisville, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Storms are expected to intensify after 2 p.m., with peak impacts stretching into early evening before continuing east into Ohio through midnight.
Damaging straight-line winds remain the primary threat, with gusts potentially exceeding 60 mph. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter is possible, especially in stronger storm cells across southern Indiana and western Kentucky. A brief, isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly north of the I-64 corridor and into southwest Ohio.
Communities along I-65, I-71, and I-75 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, including reduced visibility and debris on roadways. Power outages may occur where stronger winds develop.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Storm activity is expected to weaken later tonight, but additional updates may be issued as conditions evolve.
