Lake County, IN – A high-speed wrong-way pursuit late Saturday night on I-80 near the Illinois state line ended with the arrest of an Illinois man who allegedly sped at over 100 mph and resisted arrest, according to Indiana State Police.

The chase began around 11:00 p.m. on November 15, 2025, when Trooper Jace Haddon clocked a dark-colored Mini Cooper traveling eastbound at 103 mph in a 55 mph zone. As the trooper tried to catch up, the driver turned off the vehicle’s lights and exited onto Indianapolis Boulevard. Minutes later, another trooper spotted the Mini Cooper re-entering I-80, prompting a pursuit.

According to police, the suspect then made a U-turn on the highway and began driving the wrong way, weaving through traffic and creating a serious hazard for other motorists. Troopers executed multiple attempts to stop the vehicle before finally disabling it near Calumet Avenue.

Authorities identified the driver as Nelson Dones, 45, from Lisle, Illinois. Police say he resisted arrest and showed signs of intoxication. After refusing chemical testing, officers obtained a search warrant for a blood draw.

Dones was booked into the Lake County Jail and faces several charges, including resisting law enforcement causing bodily injury, operating while intoxicated causing injury, and reckless driving.

Trooper Haddon sustained non-life-threatening injuries while ending the pursuit.
