Chicago, Illinois – Torrential downpours are drenching the Chicago metro area Friday, prompting a Flood Watch that could lead to flash flooding on roads, underpasses, and creeks through 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, slow-moving thunderstorms are producing localized rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches, overwhelming drainage systems across Cook, DuPage, Will, and surrounding counties. The warning stretches into northwest Indiana, including Lake County.
Drivers should avoid flooded roadways—especially underpasses in low-lying areas—and commuters are urged to check local traffic updates before traveling. Flash flooding could occur quickly, especially in spots already saturated from earlier rains. The hardest-hit areas may see rapid water rise in streets, viaducts, and near small creeks.
Cities under heightened flood threat include Joliet, Aurora, Evanston, Naperville, and Gary, IN. Emergency crews may close roadways as needed, and residents should charge phones, avoid basements, and prepare for rapid water accumulation.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday. Additional warnings may follow if storms persist or rainfall intensifies.
