Lake County, IN – Drivers traveling along I-65 in northwest Indiana should prepare for major overnight traffic changes this week as phase two of bridge work between Ridge Road and 61st Avenue begins.
Overnight lane closures will take place on I-65 beginning Thursday night at 8 p.m. and continuing through 4 a.m. Friday morning to accommodate a new traffic configuration for northbound lanes. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and contractor Superior Construction Co. are leading the second phase of a bridge deck overlay project over the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
According to the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, northbound I-65 will shift to a new configuration by Friday morning. The new setup includes three northbound lanes, now split with the farthest left lane acting as a counterflow lane on the southbound side, using newly built crossovers. Southbound I-65 traffic will not change during this phase.
Additionally, the on-ramp from Ridge Road to southbound I-65 will remain closed through mid-August to ensure worker and driver safety. INDOT reports that work in this area is expected to continue through mid-October.
Motorists are strongly advised to allow for extra travel time, follow all signage, and drive distraction-free through the affected zone. INDOT emphasized the importance of caution as crews continue this vital maintenance project.
The changes are part of a larger effort to improve bridge safety and infrastructure along this critical interstate corridor.
