INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Indiana hunters are being encouraged to turn their deer harvests into meals for families across the state this hunting season. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that hunters can donate legally harvested deer through the Hunt for Hunger program to help feed hungry Hoosiers.

According to Col. Steve Hunter, director of DNR Law Enforcement, venison harvested during hunting season “is an important source of nourishment for Hoosier families.” Through the program, hunters can donate deer at no personal cost—processing fees are covered by DNR grants provided to nonprofit partners such as Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry and Farmers Feeding the Hungry.

Participating in Hunt for Hunger is straightforward: hunters drop off field-dressed deer at any participating local processor. The processors then create venison burger, which is distributed to food banks and soup kitchens statewide.

Since its inception in 2008, the program has collected and donated more than 500,000 pounds of venison, offering hundreds of thousands of meals to Indiana residents in need. The effort relies on certified processors who notify regional food banks when donations are ready for pickup.

Hunters and processors interested in participating can find more information and a full list of drop-off locations at on.IN.gov/huntforhunger.
