Indiana House Fire Claims Life of 11-Year-Old, Investigation Ongoing

Wadena, IN – A late-night house fire in Benton County tragically claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl early Sunday. Emergency responders, aided by local residents, rescued six family members trapped inside the burning home.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the fire broke out in the East 2000 block of 600 North in Wadena. First responders used a ladder to assist the family from the house. The victims, Dolores Moreno-Lazo (49), Keyry Haro-Ortega (40), and four children, were transported to local hospitals.

Benton County Coroner Matt Rosenbarger confirmed the death of 11-year-old Yuliana Haro-Ortega. The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire’s cause.

Multiple agencies, including volunteer fire departments from Fowler and Oxford-Oak Grove, assisted in the response. Emergency services from Benton and surrounding counties also provided critical support.

The investigation remains ongoing, with updates expected from the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.

This tragic incident has shaken the Wadena community, prompting support for the grieving family.
