Crown Point, IN – A new artificial intelligence-powered device is reshaping neurological care at Franciscan Health hospitals across Northwest Indiana and Chicago’s South Suburbs.

Franciscan Health has implemented the Ceribell System, a rapid-response EEG tool, at facilities in Crown Point, Dyer, Michigan City, Munster, and Olympia Fields. The portable, FDA-cleared device is designed to detect hard-to-identify seizures in critically ill patients, enabling earlier diagnosis and faster treatment.

According to Franciscan Health, the Ceribell System was first used at its Michigan City hospital in January and has since expanded to Crown Point (September), Olympia Fields (December), and more recently, Dyer and Munster this spring. The system provides bedside EEG monitoring in under five minutes using an easy-to-apply headband and AI-enabled software.

Dr. Derwin Philip, medical director of emergency services at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, said the technology “provides rapid, bedside EEG to help detect seizures in various clinical presentations.” He emphasized its benefits for diagnosis, reducing unnecessary transfers, and avoiding overtreatment.

Non-convulsive seizures—often missed due to a lack of outward symptoms—can lead to worsening conditions if not quickly managed. Experts compare the urgency of detection to stroke care, where time-sensitive interventions are crucial.

The Ceribell System is not intended to replace conventional EEG monitoring but to complement it, allowing broader use across hospital settings. A recent study found the tool reduced ICU stays by a median of four days compared to traditional EEG.

“This technology helps bridge the gap between immediate care and in-depth analysis,” said Dr. Ryan Misek, vice president of medical affairs at Franciscan Health Crown Point. “It empowers clinicians to make more informed decisions at the bedside.”
