La Porte County, IN – A New York man was taken into custody in La Porte County this week following a violent home invasion that left a local woman injured.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Matthew J. Mayer of Elmira, New York, was arrested on Thursday after deputies responded to a report of forced entry in the 6000 west block of CR 400 North in Coolspring Township. The incident occurred early Friday morning, August 9.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find Mayer outside the home and took him into custody. Authorities say the 63-year-old homeowner told deputies she saw a vehicle pull into her driveway and approached the front door before it was allegedly forced open by Mayer. Once inside, Mayer allegedly began attacking the woman until several juveniles, who had reportedly been in the vehicle with Mayer, entered the home and convinced him to stop.

Emergency responders treated the victim for upper body injuries at the scene before she was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

A sealed arrest warrant was issued for Mayer after a probable cause affidavit and charging information were prepared. He was arrested by the Warrants Division following his hospital discharge and is currently held at the La Porte County Jail on a $25,005 cash-only bond.

Mayer is facing multiple felony charges, including burglary resulting in bodily injury, battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, residential entry, and strangulation.

Authorities confirmed there is no known connection between Mayer, the victim, or the residence.

All charges are allegations, and Mayer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
