Fort Wayne, Indiana – A dangerous stretch of extreme heat will grip northern Indiana and surrounding areas starting Saturday morning, with heat index values expected to soar as high as 106°F through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect for much of the region, including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and extending into northwest Ohio and southwest Michigan. The most intense heat is forecast for Sunday and Monday, with oppressive humidity and overnight lows in the mid-70s offering little relief.

Cities such as South Bend, Lima, and Hillsdale could see four consecutive days of hazardous heat. Vulnerable populations—especially the elderly, young children, and those without reliable cooling—face increased risk of heat-related illness. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, use fans and air conditioning, and check on neighbors.

This heat event follows a trend of early-summer surges not seen since June 2012. Prolonged exposure, even indoors without cooling, can be dangerous, especially without cooler nights for recovery.

Heat alerts may be upgraded as temperatures rise. The Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
