Indianapolis, IN – Much of Indiana is facing a potentially dangerous heat threat Tuesday as major to extreme heat levels are forecast, prompting public health advisories across the state.

According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, updated heat risk maps show large swaths of Indiana under “Red 3” (Major) and “Magenta 4” (Extreme) categories for June 24. These levels indicate conditions that could affect anyone without access to cooling or proper hydration and may strain healthcare systems and heat-sensitive infrastructure.

The NWS HeatRisk tool, still in its experimental phase, combines factors like maximum temperatures, humidity, and the duration of heat conditions to assess risk. The agency notes that while high and low temperatures are expected to slightly improve as the week progresses, dew points — a key indicator of moisture and discomfort — will remain steady.

“This unusual early-season heat event brings little overnight relief and poses serious danger, especially for those with pre-existing health conditions,” the agency warned in a social media update Sunday. “Without individual heat safety measures, these conditions could quickly become overwhelming.”

The forecast emphasizes heightened vulnerability in areas including Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Lafayette, where magenta-level warnings are in place. Surrounding regions, including southern Illinois and western Kentucky, also face major-level heat risks.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak heat, hydrate frequently, and check on the elderly and vulnerable populations. Public cooling centers and hydration sites are expected to be activated in some communities.
